Synopsis: "The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin" follows a bored, middle-aged executive working for Sunshine Desserts who has a breakdown, fakes his own suicide and returns as "Martin Wellbourne" his non-existent best friend. Under the new identity he has a relationship with his wife and returns to work at the factory before he is unmasked. Reggie then decides to setup 'Grot' a business selling totally useless goods, he becomes a billionaire and once again starts to approach another breakdown. In the short-lived sequel "The Legacy of Reginald Perrin" Reggie has died and has left his friends all his money; there are however a few bizarre requests they must fulfil before they can get hold of it.
BSG Review: Reginald Perrin, played so well by Leonard Rossiter, was a great character in a great sitcom. The fact the central character was losing his mind opened up a whole avenue of funny comic possibilities (including visions of his mother-in-law as a hippopotamus). The doomed sequel was made too late after the first series and suffered from the fact Rossiter couldn't appear as he really was dead.
