British Sitcom DVDs - New Releases

Below is a list of all the British sitcom related DVDs released in the Region 2 format so far this year. To find out more or to just click on the DVD's title.

All six episodes from the particularly good fourth series of this classic sitcom. The episodes include: 'The Pit And The Pendulum', 'Descent Into The Maelstrom', 'Hearts Of Darkness', 'Warm Champagne', 'The Trial' and 'Secret Of The Seven Sorcerers'.

This two disc set also includes the brilliant 'One Foot In The Algarve' Christmas special episode and audio commentary on the 'Hearts Of Darkness' episode.

Julia Davis returns as the psychotic bunny-boiler, Jill, hell-bent on getting her man, no matter how much depravity she needs to wade through! This truly is subversive comedy at its very best.

The DVD is packed with extras including a making of documentary, an alternate version of episode one, deleted scenes and outtakes.

The brilliantly talented comedian Tony Hancock returns to DVD with more from Hancock's Half Hour. This latest release features all 10 episodes from the fifth series, originally broadcast in 1959.

The complete first series following the adventures of Hodge and Eric and their pals in the local Territorial Army. Hodge and Eric are the best of friends and have known each other since school; Spock is the specky history teacher; Lloydy the man mountain; Ally, the solicitor's wife desperately searching for her real self; Dawn, the gorgeous college student; and Diesel, the human dynamo with big ambitions.

The vintage comedy from Jimmy Perry and David Croft continues with this latest Dad's Army DVD. As Walmington-on-Sea trembles at the thought of a mighty Nazi invasion, the indefatigable Captain Mainwaring and his eager Home Guard are still ready and waiting - regardless that some of them are so old they can hardly stand up!

Series one of this innovative sitcom is being re-released with a new cover (as the previous release has now faded into obscurity). For those that don't know Peep Show is about wannabe popstar Jeremy (Robert Webb), a lazy man with big ideas, mostly about himself. He has been thrown out by his ex 'Big Suze' and has ended up living with Mark (David Mitchell), his old friend, who has a completely different no-pain-no-gain view of the world.

The first part of Al Murray's Sky broadcast Pub Landlord sitcom is out soon. The episodes on this disc are A Woman's Place, Never Confused, Hoppy Birthday, Monkey's Uncle, King Barsteward and Date With Density in which The Guv gets a date.

If you're not sure whether this is for you there is a 5 min clip of the first episode on Avalon's website.

All the episodes from the fourth series of Jimmy Perry and David Croft's It Ain't Half Hot Mum are on this new DVD. The royal Artillery Concert party are still entertaining the British troops in India during the Second World War. The colonel's secret affair is brought to light and the men find themselves in a bit of a predicament when a group of airmen mistake them for women!

Bromwell High is a highly irreverent animated comedy Channel 4 broadcast last year which follows the exploits of three exceptionally naughty girls.

This new DVD contains the six episodes which have been shown in the UK as well as a behind the scenes feature and deleted scenes. Sadly it doesn't contain the episodes which the UK hasn't seen yet though (13 episodes have been shown in Canada you see).

The 8th series of the popular sitcom on DVD. Long ago Lionel, a dashing young British Army officer met Jean, a lovely student nurse and fell deeply in love. When Lionel was shipped off to fight in the Korean war the two lost touch. Now they meet again and slowly begin to rekindle their romance. The episodes in this season are 1. A Very Personal Problem 2. Animal Magnetism 3. The Bathroom 4. Surprising News 5. Going Online.

We're somewhat surprised that this classic sitcom hasn't been released on DVD in full before now. Anyway the BBC have finally decided to release Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais' follow up to The Likely Lads which actually manages to surpass the original.

In this 13 part series Terry Collier (James Bolam) returns from his stint in the army to find his north-east home-town and its inhabitants have changed beyond recognition. Out of contact during the intervening years, his best friend Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes) has settled into a respectable white-collar job and is engaged to his boss's daughter, Thelma. With distaste, Thelma remembers Terry from the past and she is aghast that he has returned to exert what can only be his customarily poor influence over her easily led fiancé.

The fourth series of Steptoe and Son featuring everyone's favourite bickering 'rag-and-bone' junkmen. The episodes in this season are 1. And Afterwards 2. At Crossed Swords 3. Those Magnificent Men and Their Heating Machines 4. Siege of Steptoe Street 5. A Box in Town 6. My Old Man's A Tory 7. Pilgrim's Progress.

Starring Nicholas Lyndhurst, Goodnight Sweetheart became an instant hit with TV viewers and by the time this fourth series hit TV screens the comedy had properly established itself. This 2 disc boxset contains all 11 episodes from the season and audio commentaries from the creators, writers and producer.

All nine episodes which comprise the second series of the fondly remembered BBC sitcom Waiting for God.

One of the most successful TV series ever made, running from 1969 to 1973, On the Buses is a bit of a comedy classic even though it has since been panned by critics. If you're a fan here is a chance to own all 13 episodes from series four.

Note: is also being released on this day.

The Royle Family has had a bit of a sketchy DVD release history to say the least. To correct this the BBC are setting the record straight with this boxset. Each of the three series gets its own disc and the 1999 and 2000 Christmas Specials are included too. We think it is a bit cheeky they've called it 'The Complete Series' though, after all they're working on a new Christmas special right now!

If you'd prefer to buy the series individually (perhaps because you bought the Series 3 set in November) both Series 1 and 2 are also being released in their own single disc sets on May 15th.

Based on three of Peter Tinniswood’s books (A Touch Of Daniel, I Didn’t Know You Cared and Except You’re A Bird) I Didn't Know You Cared depicts the hilariously awful Brandons, an extended Northern clan struggling with the miseries and stresses of family life, with fantastic humour. The second series is available on DVD from May.

Still Game is one of those series which has been un-fairly mucked about by BBC Worldwide. The good news is that 2entertain are picking up the sitcom and releasing all four series over the next couple of months (series five hits our screens soon). It does mean that some of the series that are already out there are going to be re-released under a different cover however if you haven't yet started your collection this is good news because the existing releases are all over the place to be honest.

Even this release is a little strange though Series 1 and come out on May 22nd but and Series 3 do not appear until June 5th. Odd!

Joking Apart - Series 1

Joking Apart - Series 1

New DVD label Replay has finally given us the long-overdue release of the first series of Joking Apart, the award-winning sitcom written by Steven Moffat. It stars Robert Bathurst as a comedy writer whose life rapidly descends into riotous farce when his wife leaves him.

The DVD contains the entire first series and some specially produced extras too, including a making of featurette and very entertaining commentaries.

For the first time ever, the BAFTA award-winning Channel 4 comedy show Green Wing has been released on DVD. The boxset features all nine episodes plus 40 minutes of unseen special features which include cast and crew audio-commentaries, deleted scenes, a "The making of Green Wing" featurette and cast/crew biographies.

The third series of this sitcom about the ultimate odd couple: the popular landlord and landlady from Man About The House. Mildred is vain, snobbish and domineering; George is shy, timid, frigid and henpecked. Together they make a great partnership and a brilliant DVD!

Two single girls living in London find a third person to share their house - Robin Tripp a male chef! Now the Landlord's on the war-path; two girls and one man sharing! What is the world coming to?

The entire 8th series of Red Dwarf. Not as good as previous series many people say but still worth owning if you're a fan of the show. It is certainly has the most extras we've ever seen! The bonuses include cast commentary, feature-length episodes 'Back in the Red' and 'Pete', Comedy Connections documentary, The Tank: original documentary, Deleted scenes, Smeg ups, Trailers, Storyboard sequences and about five other things!

Note: For extra £3 you can get .

A fantastically priced DVD containing three series of one of the best British sitcoms of all-time. The Likely Lads focuses on the friendship between two working-class men, James Bolam and Rodney Bewes, living in the north east of England.

It has been released before on DVD but, for the first time, series two of this classic sitcom has been brought out in one boxset. A sequence of dramatic events befalls the residents of Eaton Place. Elizabeth becomes involved with the Suffragettes which has disastrous consequences upon Rose, a financial crisis threatens to force the Bellamys from their home, and James returns from India with a fiancee in tow who threatens to shatter the peace. The formidable Thomas and Sarah receive a rousing send-off from the other servants as they set off to begin their new life together in north London. Is this really the last time they will be seen at Eaton Place?

Fans of the Boosh rejoice - the second series is now on DVD. Having broken out of the Zoo-Niverse, vain jazzman Howard and 1960s throwback Vince are free to embark on new adventures. Although, as the pair go in search of fame and fortune, things don't quite work out as planned as they end up kidnapped by the mythical Yeti, battling the evil Betamax bandit and abducted by the merman of the Black Lake.

Loved and hated in equal measures, this classic 1970s sitcom (one of the most successful TV series ever made actually!) is now being brought out in new boxsets. Starring Reg Varney as jack-the-lad bus driver Stan and Stephen Lewis as the long-suffering, dim-witted Inspector Blake ('Blakey') who does his best to get the buses out in time whilst making their lives as miserable as possible.

Also out:

For some reason it has taken forever but the first series of this cult BBC3 sitcom is finally here.

In the world of work, there is only one place where seniority counts for nothing, where shop-talk is banned, and where the last bastions against fresh air and desk-based massage, gather regularly to discuss the minutiae of their lives: the smoking room. The extras include the Christmas Special; Writer/producer interviews; Character Biogs and Cartoons!

Two soldiers from the First World War are reunited ten years later and taken into the service of the wealthy brother of the officer whose life they saved. The series, beginning with this first one, follow the lives of the staff of a large wealthy household.

Starring Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Duncan Preston, with the snobby continuity announcer played by Susie Blake, Acorn Antiques was a mini classic sitcom which appeared in Wood's 1985 TV show. The episodes have all been put together on this DVD for the first time. Re-live the drama as Mrs Overall serves up another batch of macaroons and Babs discusses the future of the shop. What will be this week's riveting cliff hanger? Will the set survive?

The 5th series of Dad's Army is out now on DVD. Easily one of the best sitcoms to ever grace our screens this pack, which features the complete twelve episodes from the fifth series, contains some great comedy moments as the members of Walmington-On-Sea's Home Guard defend their bit of England against the onslaught of Hitler's Army.

All eight episodes from the third series plus commentaries and interviews from series creators Laurence Marks And Maurice Gran and an interview with Chris Ettridge. As the American GI's take over 1940's London, Gary's life in wartime London and the present day undergoes a noticeable change.

The complete third and final series of the culture clash sitcom in which lower class boy done good Tony Carpenter (Dennis Waterman) rubs shoulders with the less than appreciative well-to-do. Tony discovers that having money is not the answer to everything, especially with a pretentious wife, a reckless daughter, and an unconventional domestic staff.

As Time Goes By - Series 6

The 6th series on DVD is out now. For those that don't know this classic sitcom is about ex-army officer Lionel who returns to England to write his memoirs. Fate reunites him with his lost love of 38 years ago, Jean. Can their love be rekindled?

Series 2 of the popular sitcom. George and Mildred are the ultimate odd couple, the popular landlord and landlady from Man About The House who became a household name with Thames Television in the 1970's and 80's. Mildred is vain, snobbish and domineering; George is shy, timid, frigid and henpecked. Together they make a great partnership!

This second series of Bless This House concerns itself with the life of the family and general and with Sid in particular. As far as Sid and his children are concerned, there exists not so much a general gap as a grand canyon of misunderstanding and utter bewilderment.

There's hilarity at Grace Brothers, the High Street department store with a difference. Join in the fun as limp-wristed Mr Humphries and that blue-rinsed battle axe Mrs Slocombe lead the outrageous department store staff through a third series of outrageously funny episodes!

From the vaults of British television comes this comedy gem starring two consummate actors who were also a couple in real life: Dame Judi Dench and her husband Michael Williams. They play a pair of middle-aged, dating-game dropouts as wary of romance as they are perfect for each other.

The second season of the sitcom in which London bachelor girls Chrissy and Jo need a third girl to share their apartment and find the answer asleep in their bathtub. His name is Robin Tripp and though he's not a girl exactly, he is studying to be a gourmet chef, and who can tell the difference these days anyway? Landlord George Roper can, for one, and he's incensed. His wife Mildred can too, and she's intrigued... So the question is will the good-cooking newcomer Robin Tripp fall on his face or feet - or wind up with egg on his face?

The entire second series on DVD. The couple have just moved to Purley, south-east London... Aunt Lucy and the mynah bird had disappeared, as had the occasionally visiting daughters. Terry and June now mixed with a friendly next door neighbour, Beattie; Terry's chatty work colleague, Malcolm; and their gruff boss Sir Dennis Hodge. Otherwise, things were much as before, with Terry's pigheaded childishness causing no end of problems, usually thwarting June's attempts at leading a cosy life...

All the deliciously funny episodes from the third helping of Lenny Henry's sitcom. Lenny Henry stars as Gareth Blackstock, the bad-tempered chef of the Chateau Anglais restaurant. In this third series his wife has walked out on him and he is forced to sell his precious restaurant.

Yet another classic that the BBC are only just getting around to making available on DVD! Anyway, back again for another healthy portion, limp-wristed Mr. Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries and the blue-rinsed battle-axe Mrs 'Betty' Slocombe lead the outrageous department store staff through a fifth series of popular episodes!

Simon Nye's 'marmite sitcom' (we call it that as it is one of those love it or loath it comedies) is released here in full for the first time (series one was released by itself a few years back). Wild West stars Dawn French and Catherine Tate as a lesbian couple living in Cornwall. A series of bizarre events afflict the small town of St. Geep, including washed-up hordes of Tupperware, swinging parties and body-piercing (without instructions). This two disc set contains all 12 episodes of weirdness.

Although this release is not a British sitcom we felt that it could not be ignored:

In the massive and essential "Radio Times Guide to TV Comedy" the editor Mark Lewisohn includes his personal Top 20 Sitcoms of all time on British TV. His Number One is not a British production, but it is a show that has been part of the BBC schedules for nearly 50 years, and is an important element of British television heritage.

"The Phil Silvers Show" - or "Bilko" as it is usually known - has been and remains a sitcom with a unique feature that makes it Number One (or close to that) for lovers of good comedy. That feature is Phil Silvers, who was a comedy performer of undeniable genius. He dominates every moment that he is on that small screen, and even then he is complemented by wonderful performances by a host of other regular characters - Colonel Hall, Doberman, Ritzic, and the rest.

To celebrate 50 years since this historic show began on US TV, a new DVD box-set has been produced. On the three discs there are 21 complete episodes, plus some great extras, including the original pilot show never shown on British TV, revealing commentaries by Dick Van Dyke and other members of the cast, and other Phil Silvers appearances and interviews. A must-have for the DVD collections of all comedy lovers.

The adventures of Terry and June continue with this series 3 release. Otherwise, things were much as before, with Terry's pigheaded childishness causing no end of problems, usually thwarting June's attempts at leading a cosy life.

The third series of Jimmy Perry and David Croft's household sitcom is out now.
