Britiain's Best Sitcom

In early 2004 British TV channel BBC2 organised a poll of the public to find out what they considered was Britain's Best Sitcom. The ten favourites were revealed in a live final on the 27th of March 2004. The results are below along with our thoughts...

1.
(22.2% of the vote)
Only Fools and Horses

ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES

Perhaps not too surprising a winner, Del Boy and Family are national favourites and well deserved winners.

2.
(18.3%)
Blackadder

BLACKADDER

A great performance by the cunning Edmund. Blackadder is a very funny show, nice to see it finally recognised as a true masterpiece.

3.
(13.8%)
The Vicar of Dibley

THE VICAR OF DIBLEY

A shock result. No-one expected Dibley to do so well but give it credit - 13.8% of the nation said it was their favourite. Maybe not so under-rated after all!

4.
(11.3%)

DAD'S ARMY

The classic Dad's Army put in a respectable performance and came in roughly where we expected.

5.
(11.2%)
Fawlty Towers

FAWLTY TOWERS

What, only 5th! This brilliantly written and performed sitcom should be much higher. Perhaps no one bothered voting as everyone thought its place in the top two was secure?

6.
(8%)
Yes (Prime) Minister

YES, MINISTER

6th is a great achievement for such a sophisticated sitcom which requires the audience to think.

7.
(6.1%)
Porridge

PORRIDGE

Another surprise positioning. Barker's classic prison sitcom was top five material in most peoples' eyes.

8.
(4.4%)
Open All Hours

OPEN ALL HOURS

Seeing as this 70s comedy is showing its age we think it did very well to get in the top 10 let alone make it into 8th. G-G-Good Work.

9.
(2.6%)
The Good Life

THE GOOD LIFE

This feel-good sitcom obviously didn't get the voters feeling good enough to put it into the top five. 9th is still respectable though.

10.
(2%)
One Foot in the Grave

ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE

As Victor Meldrew might say "I Don't Believe It!". Could have been slightly higher but could never compete with some of the classics above.
